Winswell Enabling

I’m Garry and I am a self-employed enabler for children and adults with additional needs and/or disabilities. Although I am new to enabling, I am very experienced in caring for someone with a disability as I am the proud dad of a 24yr old young man with quad Cerebral Palsy. I may currently lack experience in a whole host of disabilities but I want you to know whether it’s yourself, your child or a loved one that requires my help I promise to ask lots of questions, have a willingness to listen and together we can come up with an individual plan tailored to their needs. That could be accessing social clubs to help interaction, supporting a hobby, life skills, improving confidence and encouraging independence or just getting out of the house for a spot of lunch. Most importantly, my aim, whilst helping the individual, is to provide respite for families so they can be confident that their loved ones are in safe hands and, hopefully, having fun. As a dad, and this is my honest and completely personal point of view, we have had good enablers and some not so good. Whilst there are some who have many years experience in a care setting and claim to know all about cerebral palsy they don’t know my son and how his disability effects him. But more importantly, there is so much more to him than just his CP and the best people, we find, are the ones who listen, engage and want to support our amazing lad. This is what I want to offer you. I have a great network of local fellow enablers and meeting up for group events such as bowling competitions or cinema trips can be organised. I am currently undertaking numerous training courses (care certificate level 3, first aid, understanding autism etc) and I have in place enhanced DBS, liability insurance etc A little bit about me: I’m 54, married with two grown up kids, two dogs and a flock of chickens, ducks and geese. I have a background in building and engineering and an interest in all types of cars and motorbikes. I enjoy watching rugby and football, fishing and pottering in my man cave/shed. I’d like to think that I have a good sense of humour although the family do moan about my dad jokes!
